Sonata Arctica is a Finnish power metal band formed in 1995 in Kemi. The group was founded by vocalist and keyboardist Tony Kakko, together with guitarist Jani Liimatainen, bassist Marko Paasikoski, and drummer Tommy Portimo. In their early years the band performed under the name Tricky Beans before later adopting the name Sonata Arctica.

The band gained international popularity in the late 1990s and early 2000s thanks to their fast, melodic power metal sound and distinctive keyboard arrangements. Their debut album Ecliptica is widely considered one of the most important releases in European power metal and helped the band build a strong global fan base.

Throughout their career, Sonata Arctica has released a number of successful albums, including Silence, Winterheart’s Guild, and Reckoning Night, which further cemented their status on the international metal scene. Their music is characterized by fast guitar riffs, melodic keyboards, and emotional lyrics that often explore themes of fantasy, personal stories, and inner emotions.

Over the years, the band has evolved its sound by incorporating more progressive and atmospheric elements in their later albums, demonstrating artistic maturity and a willingness to experiment.

Today, Sonata Arctica is regarded as one of the most important Finnish metal bands and one of the leading representatives of the European power metal genre, known for energetic live performances and a loyal global fan base.
