Paradise Lost

Paradise Lost - Arsenal Fest 2026

Paradise Lost, a British metal band formed in 1988 in the city of Halifax. The group was founded by vocalist Nick Holmes, guitarist Gregor Mackintosh, guitarist Aaron Aedy, bassist Stephen Edmondson, and drummer Matthew Archer (later replaced by Lee Morris).

Paradise Lost is considered one of the pioneers of gothic metal. Their second album, Gothic, laid the foundations of the genre by combining doom/death metal with dark melodies, keyboards, and atmospheric arrangements.

During the 1990s, the band underwent significant musical evolution. The album Icon introduced their signature gothic sound and brought them wider recognition, while Draconian Times became one of their most acclaimed releases and commercially successful albums. In the late 1990s, they explored electronic and alternative directions on albums such as One Second and Host, demonstrating their willingness to experiment and push genre boundaries.

In later years, Paradise Lost returned to a heavier and darker sound, combining elements of doom and gothic metal with more modern production. Albums such as The Plague Within and Obsidian confirm their consistency and lasting influence on the global metal scene.

With more than three decades of career behind them, Paradise Lost remains one of the most important and influential bands within the gothic and doom metal genres, known for their dark atmosphere, introspective lyrics, and the distinctive vocals of Nick Holmes.
